Credit Union E-Mail Fraud
A warning was issued this week regarding credit union email fraud for Irish consumers. An email is going out to credit union consumers. It is supposed to be from the Irish League of Credit Unions. The email begins with a security alert or unauthorised access to your account. The email then goes on to state that there is a potential for fraud and that the recipient of the email must comply with the emails directions offered.
The email asks for a submission of personal details, credit card number, and then the form is supposed to be sent via a website for verification. The emails also tell consumers that their access to their accounts will be limited until the credit fraud is resolved. In other words don’t try to use the account because it is frozen. The consumers are threatened that if the form is not returned their account could be closed. This type of fraud is phishing for information. The fraudster hopes the receiver will not report the email and instead follow instructions.
The fact of this fraud is that it is targeted and the fraudsters know what needed to be seen in the email to get action. All Irish consumers are being warned about fraud of this type on credit card and other financial accounts.
