Ireland Fraud Grows

A recent survey was completed on how people protect themselves against credit card fraud.  Questions were also asked as to whether they take precaution at all.  The numbers are not as scary as they were perhaps three months ago as more and more individuals in Ireland are learning about credit card fraud and what to do.

This has not stopped the fraud, but at least more are sitting up and taking action.  In Ireland the police investigated a current case of card fraud.  The theft seems to have taken about 1 million Euros from 300 bank accounts.  The local news media states that the criminals paid a shop and restaurant workers to skin cards and get the Pin numbers.  They stood over the shoulders of the person watching as the pin was typed in.  The information was then cloned on the card in order to use it under a fake identity to withdraw cash around Europe.  Places like Italy, Spain, and Romania were targets of the cloning use in April and May.

This and many other cases in the recent news are important to learn from.  Taking precautionary steps to protect your credit cards and identity doesn’t take any time out of your day, just a few direct thoughts to being proactive.

Here are some steps regarding credit card protection that you can take:

Taking precautions doesn’t mean your card details can’t be found.  Computer systems can be hacked or bank employees can turn, but this is a rare case especially if you are cautious in the places that you use your card.

If fraud does occur make sure to report it right away to cancel the card and get the charges removed.  By looking at your statement at least once a week online you can keep track of your card and bank accounts.
